How secure is relay?
The pros and cons of Apple Private Relay
It's relatively secure, but it does have pros and cons to keep in mind. One pro is that it's built into the device, so there's no need for another app to secure your web traffic. Another advantage is that Apple purportedly cannot see your data at all.
How secure is private relay?
When Private Relay is enabled, your requests are sent through two separate, secure internet relays. Your IP address is visible to your network provider and to the first relay, which is operated by Apple. Your DNS records are encrypted, so neither party can see the address of the website you're trying to visit.
Is private relay a VPN?
Is Private Relay a VPN? There is certainly some overlap in benefits between Private Relay and VPN. Both use encryption, both mask your true IP address, and both help obscure your internet traffic. But Private Relay is not a VPN and it shouldn't be considered a direct VPN alternative either.
Does private relay cause issues?
Apple acknowledges that iCloud Private Relay can cause problems, in part due to the new transport protocols it uses. iCloud Private Relay also takes over from your DNS servers, which may account for some of the problems; at least one user had a Pi-hole ad blocker installed.
