Is anomaly scan accurate for gender?

Ultrasound scan

The most common way to find out whether you're having a girl or a boy is at your 20-week ultrasound scan (anomaly scan). This is usually offered between 18 and 21 weeks of pregnancy. Sometimes, however, it's not possible to find out the sex at the anomaly scan.

What is the difference between normal ultrasound and anomaly scan?

It is an ultrasound that checks your baby's size and body organs. Your doctor is likely to recommend you have this test, but the decision to do so is yours. A morphology scan is sometimes called a 'fetal anomaly' scan since it is one way your doctor will check your baby for birth defects.

Can anomaly scan detect Down syndrome?

An anomaly scan is considered very precise, but it is impossible to diagnose congenital abnormalities thoroughly. In the case of Down syndrome, the chance of detection with an anomaly scan ranges from 50% to 60%. Most cases appear normal in an ultrasound scan.

Is anomaly scan painful?

Having the scan does not hurt, but the sonographer may need to apply slight pressure to get the best views of the baby. A black and white picture of the baby will then be seen on the ultrasound screen.

How do I prepare for anomaly scan?

Can a girl be mistaken for a boy on scan?

We tend to overpredict boys more often than girls.

This can happen, for example, if the baby is developing slowly and the tubercle hasn't begun to point up or the umbilical cord is mistaken for a penis. While gender prediction is much more accurate during the 20-week ultrasound, there's still a chance it can be wrong.
