What is EFS in AWS used for?

Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) is a simple, serverless, set-and-forget, elastic file system. There is no minimum fee or setup charge. You pay only for the storage you use, for read and write access to data stored in Infrequent Access storage classes, and for any provisioned throughput.

Is AWS EFS just NFS?

AWS EFS supports NFS 4.0 and 4.1, but an important caveat is that NFS on Amazon only works with Linux instances (Amazon provides shared storage for Windows using a different service, Amazon FSx). Any Linux-based EC2 machine can mount a folder stored on EFS as a local drive, using NFS.

How is EFS different from S3?

Amazon S3 (Amazon Simple Storage Service) is an object storage designed for storing large numbers of user files and backups. Amazon EFS (Amazon Elastic File System) provides scalable network file storage for Amazon EC2 cloud computing service users.

What is EFS and how it works?

EFS is a user-based encryption control technique that enables users to control who can read the files on their system. The typical method of using EFS is to perform encryption at the folder level. This ensures that all files added to the encrypted folder are automatically encrypted.

What are some limitations of EFS?

Maximum size of a single file: 52,673,613,135,872 bytes (47.9 TiB). Maximum directory depth: 1,000 levels deep. Any one particular file can have up to 512 locks across all instances connected and users accessing the file. Amazon EFS file system policies have a 20,000 character limit.

Why is EFS faster than S3?

EFS has the simplest cost structure. Amazon S3 can be accessed from anywhere. AWS EBS is only available in a particular region, while you can share files between regions on multiple EFS instances. EBS and EFS are both faster than Amazon S3, with high IOPS and lower latency.

What type of storage is EFS?

EFS is a file storage service for use with Amazon compute (EC2, containers, serverless) and on-premises servers. EFS provides a file system interface, file system access semantics (such as strong consistency and file locking), and concurrently accessible storage for up to thousands of EC2 instances.

Does EFS need VPC?

Creating an EFS

An EFS is created within an AWS Virtual Private Cloud (AWS VPC) and must be attached to EC2 instances within the same VPC. All the resources associated with an EFS—VPC, EC2 instances, and the EFS itself—must reside in the same AWS region. To host an EFS, you can use a default VPC or a custom VPC.

Is EFS a VPC?

You can mount an Amazon EFS file system in your virtual private cloud (VPC), through the Network File System versions 4.0 and 4.1 (NFSv4) protocol. We recommend using a current generation Linux NFSv4.

How do I upload files to EFS?

Open tab Outputs in the main stack and click the link. This link will direct you to the webpage where you need to log in with the previously provided email and temporary login you will receive on it. Then click on "false" and wait until a new nested stack will be created. Create directory and upload file.

What is the difference between EBS and EFS?

EFS automatically scales as users upload and delete files. EBS volumes can scale vertically by reconfiguring volume types and horizontally by managing additional EC2 volumes. Both storage types offer low-latency, consistent connections and high availability (99.999%). They can also scale as needs dictate.

What is difference between EBS and EFS and S3?

Interface: S3 provides you a web interface while EBS provides a file system interface and EFS provides a web and file system interface. Storage Type: AWS S3 is object storage while Amazon EBS is block storage and Amazon EFS is file storage.

How do you use EFS in EC2?

To create an EFS file system using Amazon EFS Quick Create

Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/ . Choose Launch Instance. On the Choose an AMI page, choose a Linux AMI. On the Choose an Instance Type page, select an instance type and then choose Next: Configure Instance Details.

When should we use EFS?

EFS is the best choice for running any application that has a high workload, requires scalable storage, and must produce output quickly. It scales automatically, even to meet the most abrupt workload spikes. After the period of high-volume storage demand has passed, EFS will automatically scale back down.

What is the maximum storage size of EFS?

Maximum size of a single file: 52,673,613,135,872 bytes (47.9 TiB). Maximum directory depth: 1,000 levels deep. Any one particular file can have up to 512 locks across all instances connected and users accessing the file. Amazon EFS file system policies have a 20,000 character limit.
