What is EFS replication in AWS?

Amazon EFS Replication allows you to natively create a copy of your file system in an AWS Region or AZ of your choice. Amazon EFS Replication automatically and transparently copies your data from your source file system to the destination and can maintain an RPO of 15 minutes for most file systems.

Does AWS EFS support cross region replication?

Cross-regional replication can be configured inside a single AWS region or across two AWS regions in the same AWS partition in minutes for new or existing EFS file systems. Replication begins immediately after configuration.

What is EFS and why it is used?

Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) provides serverless, fully elastic file storage so that you can share file data without provisioning or managing storage capacity and performance.

How do I create an Amazon EFS replication?

To configure replication, I open the Amazon EFS Console , view the file system that I want to replicate, and select the Replication tab: I click Create replication, choose the desired destination region, and select the desired storage (Regional or One Zone).

How is EFS different from S3?

Amazon S3 (Amazon Simple Storage Service) is an object storage designed for storing large numbers of user files and backups. Amazon EFS (Amazon Elastic File System) provides scalable network file storage for Amazon EC2 cloud computing service users.

What are some limitations of EFS?

Maximum size of a single file: 52,673,613,135,872 bytes (47.9 TiB). Maximum directory depth: 1,000 levels deep. Any one particular file can have up to 512 locks across all instances connected and users accessing the file. Amazon EFS file system policies have a 20,000 character limit.

Is EFS regional or global?

Amazon EFS is a regional service storing data within and across multiple Availability Zones (AZs) for high availability and durability.

Is EFS faster than S3?

EBS and EFS are both faster than Amazon S3, with high IOPS and lower latency.

When should we use EFS?

EFS is the best choice for running any application that has a high workload, requires scalable storage, and must produce output quickly. It scales automatically, even to meet the most abrupt workload spikes. After the period of high-volume storage demand has passed, EFS will automatically scale back down.

How Good Is EFS encryption?

EFS benefits

The user does not need to remember passwords once the file is encrypted. EFS minimizes the probability of dictionary attacks with its strong key security, making it superior to many other applications where keys are based on user-entered passphrases.

How does EFS store the files?

The EFS Standard storage classes are regional storage classes that store file system data and metadata redundantly across multiple geographically separated Availability Zones within an AWS Region.

What is the difference between EFS and FSx?

You can use EFS and FSx interchangeably for most applications that support network file shares. But EFS is better for applications designed for heterogeneous environments and those that run on Linux systems.

When should we use EFS?

EFS is the best choice for running any application that has a high workload, requires scalable storage, and must produce output quickly. It scales automatically, even to meet the most abrupt workload spikes. After the period of high-volume storage demand has passed, EFS will automatically scale back down.

How does AWS DMS replication work?

AWS DMS uses a replication instance to connect to your source data store, read the source data, and format the data for consumption by the target data store. A replication instance also loads the data into the target data store. Most of this processing happens in memory.

Why is EFS faster than S3?

EFS has the simplest cost structure. Amazon S3 can be accessed from anywhere. AWS EBS is only available in a particular region, while you can share files between regions on multiple EFS instances. EBS and EFS are both faster than Amazon S3, with high IOPS and lower latency.

Is EFS just NFS?

Amazon EFS is an NFS file system service offered by AWS. An Amazon EFS file system is excellent as a managed network file system that can be shared across different Amazon EC2 instances and works like NAS devices. Amazon EBS is the block storage offered on AWS.

Is EFS a SAN or NAS?

[EFS is a NAS, but again under the hood on an Storage Array , managed with sync, replication, scalability etc.]

Is AWS EFS just NFS?

AWS EFS supports NFS 4.0 and 4.1, but an important caveat is that NFS on Amazon only works with Linux instances (Amazon provides shared storage for Windows using a different service, Amazon FSx). Any Linux-based EC2 machine can mount a folder stored on EFS as a local drive, using NFS.

Is EFS automatically encrypted?

When you create a new file system using the Amazon EFS console, encryption at rest is enabled by default.

How reliable is EFS?

Amazon EFS file system backup data created and managed by AWS Backup is replicated to three AZs and is designed for 99.999999999% (11 nines) durability.
