What is MQTT over TLS?

MQTTS is the TLS secured version of the MQTT protocol. MQTTS means Message Queuing Telemetry Transport Secured. It is commonly used for machine to machine communication between embedded systems or IoT devices.

What version of TLS does Mosquitto use?

By default, Mosquitto accepts TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2.

How do you check if TLS 1.2 is enabled?

In the Windows menu search box, type Internet options. Under Best match, click Internet Options. In the Internet Properties window, on the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section. Check the User TLS 1.2 checkbox.

Does MQTT need TLS?

MQTT Modules can be enabled to use SSL/TLS to encrypt the communication between MQTT clients which is useful if used on a public network. MQTT communications are not encrypted by default and enabling SSL/TLS is highly recommended on a public network.

Can MQTT be hacked?

If the MQTT server used is unsecure, a hacker can easily access the user's dashboard, which allows them to easily hack the smart home. Avast found that MQTT can, in certain instances, allow hackers to track users' location, as MQTT servers typically concentrate on real time data.

Is SSL same as TLS?

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is the successor protocol to SSL. TLS is an improved version of SSL. It works in much the same way as the SSL, using encryption to protect the transfer of data and information. The two terms are often used interchangeably in the industry although SSL is still widely used.

Do you need WiFi for MQTT?

A MQTT broker doesn't require "The Internet". They will (normally) require a TCP/IP network, but this can be as simple as just a TCP/IP stack on a single machine.

Is MQTT a WiFi?

MQTT allows the complete line of NCD WiFi sensors to communicate via the internet to any MQTT Broker service using a WiFi connection. It only requires network connection credentials, connection information about the MQTT Host Broker, and authentication information for the MQTT connection if applicable.

Does MQTT require IP address?

No, only the MQTT broker needs a fixed IP address (and preferably a DNS entry) so the clients know where to find it. All the MQTT clients (both subscribers and publishers), be they native MQTT or MQTT over websockets connect out to the broker.

Does MQTT support TLS?

MQTT Modules can be enabled to use SSL/TLS to encrypt the communication between MQTT clients which is useful if used on a public network. MQTT communications are not encrypted by default and enabling SSL/TLS is highly recommended on a public network.

How do I authenticate with TLS?

How TLS provides authentication. For server authentication, the client uses the server's public key to encrypt the data that is used to compute the secret key. The server can generate the secret key only if it can decrypt that data with the correct private key.

How TLS works step by step?

The client contacts the server using a secure URL (HTTPS…). The server sends the client its certificate and public key. The client verifies this with a Trusted Root Certification Authority to ensure the certificate is legitimate. The client and server negotiate the strongest type of encryption that each can support.

Why it may be problematic to use TLS to secure the communication between the MQTT broker and the IoT devices?

TLS Overhead

There is a drawback to using MQTT over TLS: Security comes at a cost in terms of CPU usage and communication overhead. While the additional CPU usage is typically negligible on the broker, it can be a problem for very constrained devices which are not designed for computation-intensive tasks.

Who created TLS?

TLS was proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an international standards organization, and the first version of the protocol was published in 1999. The most recent version is TLS 1.3, which was published in 2018.
