What is the indication for ORS?

ORS should be given for each loose stool. If the child has 2 or more of the signs of severe dehydration (more than 10 loose stools/day, much vomiting, inability to drink fluids, and no urine for 6 hours), intravenous rehydration is necessary.

When is ORS contraindicated?

Contraindications to ORT include shock, severe dehydration, intractable vomiting, coma, acute abdomen, or absent bowel sounds.

What is a contraindication for oral rehydration salt?

Contraindications : Known hypersensitivity to medicines containing potassium, sodium, citrates, rice, or sugar.

What are the contents and indication of ORS?

Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is an oral powder–containing mixture of glucose sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium citrate. After being dissolved in the requisite volume of water they are intended for the prevention and treatment of dehydration due to diarrhea, including maintenance therapy.

WHO recommended ORS?

For more than two decades, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the standard formulation of glucose‐based ORS with 90 mmol/L of sodium and 111 mmol/L of glucose and a total osmolarity of 311 mmol/L.

Is ORS contraindicated in diabetes?

Conclusions: Oral rehydration solutions containing glucose, rice powder, or glycine can be safely administered to diabetic patients with acute diarrhoea and some dehydration.

Is ORS contraindicated in pregnancy?

ORS carries the precise ratio of ingredients. Speak to your doctor about the amount in which it should be taken. Pregnant women can opt for this solution as it is safe, provides immediate results, and is affordable. The solution tastes good and is well-balanced with all the essential ingredients to hydrate a person.

Why is ORS not given in diabetes?

Since the large part of the ORS solution is glucose, some diabetic patients express concern over drinking it, lest it spikes up their sugar level.

What are the contraindications of electrolytes?

TPN Electrolytes (multiple electrolyte additive) is contraindicated in pathological conditions where additives of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium or chloride could be clinically deleterious, e.g., anuria, hyperkalemia, heart block or myocardial damage and severe edema due to cardiovascular, renal or hepatic ...

Why is ORS not used in malnutrition?

The standard WHO ORS solution for general use has a high sodium and low potassium content, which is not suitable for severely malnourished children.

Why is ORS contraindicated in severe dehydration?

The original ORS (90 mmol sodium/L) and the current standard reduced-osmolarity ORS (75 mmol sodium/L) both contain too much sodium and too little potassium for severely malnourished children with dehydration due to diarrhea.

Why ORS is not good for health?

It is not recommended that normally hydrated persons drink OS-1 on a daily basis to keep themselves hydrated. OS-1 contains more electrolytes such as sodium and potassium than ordinary drinks. Patients with hypertension and decreased renal functions should consult with their doctors before use.

Why should we not drink ORS during diarrhea?

The total osmolarity – a measure of how concentrated a solution is – of ORSL is 585 mmol/L as against the WHO recommended ORS, which should have an osmolarity of 245 mmol/L. The higher concentration is harmful to diarrhoea patients.

Should we not drink ORS during diarrhea?

ORS is safe and can be used to treat anyone suffering from diarrhoea, without having to make a detailed diagnosis before the solution is given.
