Does Tor need SSL?
Related to the previous point, some protocols, frameworks, and infrastructures use SSL as a technical requirement; they won't work if they don't see an "https://" link. In that case, your Onion Service will need to use an HTTPS certificate in order to function.
Is SSL same as TLS?
Transport Layer Security (TLS) is the successor protocol to SSL. TLS is an improved version of SSL. It works in much the same way as the SSL, using encryption to protect the transfer of data and information. The two terms are often used interchangeably in the industry although SSL is still widely used.
Can I create my own SSL certificate?
A private key and certificate signing request are required to create an SSL certificate. These can be generated with a few simple commands. When the openssl req command asks for a “challenge password”, just press return, leaving the password empty.
